From Gavin Hartford

8 Half Moon Street, London

To Geraldine Hartford

Shulfield Hall, Tutting-on-Cress

5 January 1816

Gerry,

I am relieved by your response to my inanities in the previous letter. I do not know if you are correct in your assessment of the situation. However, since you so often are, I will consider, as you requested. I own Kentworthy must feel some affection towards me, as a friend, but I do not believe it to run any deeper than friendship. It has occurred to me he may only feel pity for me. It would explain everything he has done so far, including his kindness when I was ill.

As for the rest, I am not sure of my own feelings on the matter. That is to say, I am sure of my feelings, but I am dreadfully fearful of exploring them, only to have them disappointed. You will deny it, of course, but you are overly generous with me. You always have been. It is possible that I am overly critical of myself, but I already struggle believing myself worthy of Kentworthy’s friendship. How could I possibly ever be worthy of more? It does not bear thinking, Gerry. I daresay I have much to be thankful for already. What could it possibly serve to wish for what I could never have? Please do not press me on the subject.

Kentworthy took me to Vauxhall Gardens the other night to celebrate the New Year and we watched the fireworks display. I drank one glass of arrack-punch before he refilled my cup with water. I fear he no longer trusts me with alcohol. Do you see what I mean? Pity truly seems to be driving a great deal of his actions.

We ran into Viscount Finlington while we were there and I am pleased to report that, for once, I did not act like an utter fool in front of the gentleman. I asked him how he learned to master Motion spells so easily and he laughed, chucked me under the chin, and said my skills of observation were “scrumptious.” He did not answer my question. Kentworthy explained to him that my sister is a proficient spellcaster and has been learning spell-building. I was worried he would go into details about my foolishness with the dragon’s breath but, thankfully, he was circumspect on that point.

Finlington did ask a great deal about you, though. After hearing all about you, Finlington asked me about my own talents. Kentworthy was shockingly eloquent on the subject as well. In the end, Finlington requested to be present sometime when I cast one of your spells and he declared himself desirous to meet you. In fact, he learned more about both of our talents in magic than I learned about his.

It occurs to me that the viscount is a very private person, for all his outrageousness and eccentricities. I mentioned this to Kentworthy later and commented that the gentleman’s reluctance to speak about himself made me all the more curious about him. Kentworthy laughed and said, “Now you know how it feels, darling.
